January 2009 TNT Round 3

Wiebe, D. - Green, J., 1-0

The game gets interesting around move 22. First White plays 23. Bxf7+, but 23. Nxf7 is likely just winning. In the game, by move 27 Black is a piece up, but is tied down defending his king, and ultimately missed a fork in a difficult position

Kernetsky, M. - Campbell, G., 1-0

After 23. Nc3, Black did not find the only move to avoid the piece loss, 23...Qa6.

Green, A. - Rutter, B., 1-0

Black first goes wrong with 16...g5; 16...Bd6 solves the problem of the defence of his e6 pawn. But more critical is 22...Qc6 ? which loses a rook. Black has great alternatives in 22...Rxg5 followed by f3+, or 22...f3+

Goodman, C. - Mundwiler, L., 0-1

White is doing fine until he errs with 29. Nxf5 -which ends up losing a piece.

Einarsson, K. - Lauritson, J., 0-1

White has to try 19. Rfe1 to pick up the e6 pawn, giving some prospects for survival.

Swift, R. - Czarny, K., 1-0

The players quickly enter a bishop and pawn ending that looks better for Black. Black misses a chance for a long term winning advantage when he did not play 26...h5. Black is probably lost after he allowed a white pawn to get to c6. But both players err on move 36 and 37. First White doesn't protect his e4 pawn, and then Black doesn't take the d5 pawn.

Evans, B. - Lipic, S., 0-1

In Stephen's words; "Brian(White) got a pawn advantage although I managed to come out with a drawish looking Rook vs. Rook ending.

Brian traded off the Rooks and tried to take the long way around my King. Needless to say, the long way cost him too many tempi and consequently the game."

Milord, F. - Gibbons, L., 1-0

White wins a piece but gives it back later. Lorne is even up a pawn a few moves later, but then makes the last blunder.

Ott, R. - Trueman, F., 1-0

Incomplete game score. I am wondering why White didn't take a free pawn with 19.Nxf7 or 19. Nxg6

January 2009 TNT Round 2

L. Mundwiler - J. Green, 0-1
White emerged from the early manoeuvring with a tremendous initiative.
(Instead of 32. Bh5 - 32. Rxf7 ! would have been a nice shot to win an important pawn.)

However, he was reluctant to take on f7 later - 36. Bxf7 + again wins a least a pawn, as 32...Kxf7
33. Bh4+ Qxf5 34. Rxf5+ Kg6 35. Rxf8. Instead 36. Bc3 loses a piece, and the rest is easy for Black.

A. Green - M. Kernetsky, draw
Are White's kingside pawns an asset or liability ? We'll never know.

K. Czarny - D. Wiebe, 0-1
Incomplete game score. after the 20 moves we have it is clear that the white king is in big trouble.

G. Campbell - R. Swift, 1-0
Black goes wrong with 22...Bg6;...Bd7 is preferable keeping an eye on c6 and c8. After the game move, Black is just lost, and White mops up effectively. Note that White could have played 24. Rxb5, but the line he selected is at least as good, as he keeps his doubled rooks.

J. Lauritson - B. Evans, 1-0
Black drifts early with the unforced 7...Bxc3, and loses a critical pawn on move 14.

F. Trueman - K. Einarson, 0-1
White's f4 idea leaves his e-pawn indefensible

S. Lipic - R. Ott, 1-0
Black gets creative with the sacrifice 24...Nde5 ?. Black misses a chance to continue the game with 30...Nf2, when the game is quite unclear.

B. Rutter - L. Gibbons, 1-0
Black manouvres his blacksquared bishop from the kingside, where it belongs, to b6, with disastrous results.

January TNT Round 1

K. Einarsson (1690) - L. Mundwiler (1997), 0-1
Black grabs more and more space; White tries a desperate attack that is easily defended.

M. Kernetsky (1979) - C. Goodman (1646), 1-0
Black inadequately prepares 17...c5 and his game quickly falls apart.

R. Swift (1612) - J. Lauritson (1957), 1-0
Black had problems finding squares for his dark-squared bishop.
19...Rad8 gives White a chance at a shot...

20. Nf6+ gxf6 (20... Bxf6 21. gxf6; 20...Kh8 21. Nd5) 21. gxf6 Bxf6 22. Bxf6 Nxf6 23. Qg5 Kh8 and winning, but White played 20. Qe3.
It looks like Black's last chance at survival was 25...Rfe8.
A nice game by Ryne over his much higher rated opponent.

D. Wiebe (1839) - S. Lipic (1606), 1-0
Black loses a pawn to a simple intermezzo. Just wondering if Black actually resigned at move 24, a pawn down in the rook ending.

F. Milord (1584) - A. Green (1776), 0-1
29. hxg6 is a mistake that loses the game for White. He is slightly better until then.

J. Green (1773) - F. Trueman (1566), 1-0
Black flagged in a easily won position.

B. Evans (1537) - H. Greenberg (1768), draw
13. Ne4 would have created major problems for Black.

K. Czarny (1710) - R. Ott (1426), 1-0
Black starts an interesting king hunt with 21...Rxf2.
White's king travels from g1 to d6, then finds safety on a3. Black missed playing 25...Qg2+ 26. Bf3 Qxg3 and the attack likely works.
After the game's 27...Qf7+ my silicon beast says it is a mate in 5.

Cecil's Saturday Puzzle - January 17, 2009

from the Winnipeg Free Press

White to mate in 3 (Bellas)

I tried moving the king up to e4 and d4, but didn't get anywhere. White has to cover the black diagonals, so after a couple of tries I found the answer. 1. Qa7

1.Qa7 Ke6
( 1...Kd5 2.Rf5+ Kd6 3.Qxd7# )
( 1...d5 2.Qe7+ Kd4 3.Qe3# )
( 1...d6 2.Qe3+ Kd5 3.Rf5# )
( 1...Ke4 2.Qc5 d6 ( 2...d5 3.Qe3# ) 3.Bd3# )
2.Qd4 d5
( 2...d6 3.Qe4# )
( 2...Ke7 3.Qf6# ) 3.Qf6#

This is very near our old room of 5L24 and is in fact on the same floor.

Easiest way to get there is the same way to 5L24 - take the elevator at the north end (Ellice) to the 5th Floor(if that Elevator is operating) Otherwise, there is an elevator just to the west of the Bookstore.
