Cecil's Saturday Puzzle August 15, 2009

From the Winnipeg Free Press, Saturday, August 15, 2009
White to mate in 2 (Jacob Funk)

Solutions: Apparently there is a 'cook', unless I got the position wrong.
Stephen in the comments hit on both of them but rejected 1. Nf3 because of 1...Nc6, but then 2.Bxf7#
But 1. Rxc3 apparently mates in two also.

August 2009 TNT Round 3 Results

There is a glitch with the chessmanitoba.com server so I will post results here.

No draws ! No upsets ! Boron disappointed the rest of the pack with 1.5 by failing to stop Kaptsan who now sits alone 3-0. It will likely be Khedkar's task next week to create a tie for first.
The August auditions for "So You Think You Can Play Chess", conclude on August 25.

Canadian Closed Round 9

Dwight has informed me that Trevor drew with Black against Keith MacKinnon.
So 4-5 in a very tough and experienced crowd. A very credible result.
Trevor's FIDE rating is estimated to be 2131 on the September list.

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Canadian Closed Round 8

Dwight has informed me that Trevor lost to Hambleton.

Friday, August 14, 2009

Canadian Closed Round 7

Trevor is back to 50 % with a win over Liam Henry.
2 rounds to go. He has White vs. Aman Hambleton (2234) Saturday.

18. h3 appears to be the first new move. White with 25. Bf5 allows Trevor to preserve the exchange for a move, when he gives it back under favourable circumstances. The rest is easy for a player of Trevor's caliber.

Cecil's Saturday Puzzle

From the Winnipeg Free Press, August 1, 2009

White to mate in 3 (Dobbs)

I didn't have time to look at this, but the answer is 1.Ra4. I am quite confident I would NOT have found it.
1. Ra4 Kf5 2. Ra5 d3 3. Nd6#
1. Ra4 Kf5 2. Ra5 Ke4 3. Nd6#
1. Ra4 d3 2.Ne3 Kxe5 3.Bf4#

Canadian Closed Round 6

In the second last game to finish, Trevor lost to FM Hans Jung(2140)
Friday he plays Black against Liam Henry.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Canadian Closed Round 5

Trevor lost - I will post game later, with some help from Rybka.
Tayar -Vincent
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nb5 d6 6.Bf4 e5 7.Be3 a6 8.N5c3 Nf6 9.Bc4 Be6 10.Nd5 Nxe4 11.Bb6 Qg5 12.Nc7 Kd7 13.Be2 Rc8 14.Nxe6 fxe6 15.O-O d5 16.c4 d4 17.Nc3 Nxc3 18.bxc3 Bd6 19.f4 exf4 20.cxd4 f3 21.Rxf3 Rhf8 22.Rh3 Rf4 23.Rd3 Ke7 24.c5 Bc7 25.Bxc7 Rxc7 26.d5 exd5 27.Rxd5 Rf5 28.Rxf5 1-0

15...d5 looks like a new move, but 17...Nxc3 may be a problem...the silicon beast prefers 17...Nf6, as in the game Black's centre gets busted up and his king is stuck in the middle. But White apparently missed some moves to grab a big advantage, and Trevor is close to equalizing after 27...Qf6 instead of 27...Rf5??

Canadian Closed Round 4

Trevor defeated Calugar to move to a fine 2.5 - 1.5, only .5 behind the six leaders.

He gets a stern test Wednesday with Black against FM Jonathan Tayar (2436).

Canadian Closed - Round 3

T. Kaminski - Trevor Vincent DRAW

Dwight Vincent reports:
Game was tough and very sharp (Stonewall Dutch) with the younger (and much improved) of the Kaminski brothers from Calgary. Trevor was in a positional situation he didn't like for most of the game. However he managed to pull out a draw in the endgame. It was a very tense game for both players with a weird pattern of pawns in the middlegame.
Round 4, Trevor will have White against Arthur Calugar (2262)

Sunday, August 9, 2009

Canadian Closed - Round 2

Trevor defeated Qin.
Trevor has Black against Thomas Kaminski (2183) in Round 3 Monday.

Canadian Closed

We will be following the Canadian Closed in Guelph where Manitoba champion Trevor Vincent had Black against IM Artiom Samsonkin (2584) in today's Round 1.

Trevor's father Dwight says, "Trevor played Samsonkin, the 2nd highest rated player. It went the full 5 hours and Trevor resigned with about 20 seconds on his clock in an endgame position he thought wasn't great.
This is a very strong tournament in everyone's agreement. So far it's being
run very well in my opinion."

Note: I see the gamescore overlapping at the right - I will attempt to fix.

Trevor survived early pressure and equalizes after tripling on the g-file. Rybka didn't like 45...Rc6, preferring 45...Bh4, keeping the White king at home. In the game, the king quickly becomes White's best piece.

Sunday Trevor has White against Joey Qin (2240)

"Johnny" sighting

I was perusing the US Open standings today when I came across a listing for
FM Glenn Johnstone. "Johnny" is about three years younger than me; he was a regular in the Winnipeg tournaments in the late seventies and beyond. He got really strong / and moved to Ontario a long time ago. He appears to have returned to chess and resurfaced in Kentucky or thereabouts.

35 years ago today...

I (and several hundred others, there were over 600 players in 2 sections) were playing in Round 8 of the 1974 Canadian Open in Montreal.
I was rummaging about in my basement today and came across the tournament brochure and related material.

My opponent in Round 8 was Peter Tamburro Jr., who is still active in chess circles in New Jersey.
The documents indicate that entry fee was $ 12, and one could stay at the University of Montreal residence for $ 20 / week !!! (of course that is where most of us stayed).
Several Manitobans made the trip including; John Burstow, Cecil Rosner, Neil Kirton, Jeff Babb, Scott Cleghorn, Ferd Bernjack, Ron Sloboda, Eric Jefferson, Harold Poustie, and Barry Rasmussen(who had to withdraw early if I recall correctly). Results below from Chess Canada magazine. (click for larger image)
